锂盐药物普遍用于精神类疾病治疗的历史已有七十多年，但是至今科学家仍然没有完全弄清楚锂抗抑郁症的机制。可能的机制包括环磷腺苷假说、肌醇耗竭假说、丝氨酸-苏氨酸激酶-3（GSK-3）等等，但是这些机制并不能完全说明问题。不过，哈佛医学院布鲁斯·扬克纳博士领导的研究团队从机制研究出发，发现了锂具有治疗另一种重要疾病的潜力，这种疾病正是阿尔茨海默病。
